DE25 Workshop Two - Digital Engineering in Action: Exploring Digital Twins, Digital Thinking and Strategic Approaches for System Development

19/Mar/2025 @ 02:30 PM - 04:00 PM

Developing new systems requires a modern approach integrating digital twins, digital thinking, and digital thread to enhance efficiency, cost awareness, and adaptability in evolving markets. With the rapid advancement of technology, organisations must implement structured digital engineering practices to ensure seamless integration, improved performance, and future scalability. System development involves balancing technical requirements with time, resources, and cost constraints. Digital thinking enables organisations to explore advanced solutions, take calculated risks, and drive effective decision-making in a data-driven environment. To achieve this, a robust framework applying digital Twins, digital thinking, and digital thread is essential for streamlining processes, optimising system performance, and ensuring seamless collaboration across engineering, marketing, and operational teams. This approach enhances risk management, supports lifecycle efficiency, and facilitates continuous system improvements. By integrating digital twins, digital thinking, and strategic approaches, organisations can develop next-generation systems that are resilient, scalable, and aligned with the demands of the digital era.

Questions to ask:
  1. How can company leaders effectively drive system development providing successful error free products through new technologies?
  2. Firstly, a collaborative approach towards a shared vision of system development must be combined with recognition of known constraints.
  3. Secondly, a robust framework will ensure delivery of error-free products

Model Driven Engineering comprehensively encapsulates the creation of new technologies and the detailed development of systems.
  • How can digital twins be utilised to maximise the efficiency of a company’s system development? In what ways can a digital thread enhance a company’s system development process?
  • How is traditional Systems Engineering evolving into Model Driven Engineering?
  • How can Model Driven Engineering support a Maths-to-Manufacturing process through the use of digital thread?

Aims and Objectives

This tutorial will focus on how digital twins are transforming engineering by leveraging virtual models of physical systems. Attendees will explore how digital twins enable real-time simulation, failure prediction, and performance optimisation, offering robust solutions for complex engineering challenges. This tutorial will further explore key topics, including strategies for implementing model-driven engineering and, emphasising its role in achieving successful system integration. The session will also highlight the critical benefits of these approaches, such as enhanced decision-making capabilities and cost savings, making them essential tools for modern engineering practices. This tutorial will be delivered as an interactive problem-solving workshop and welcomes attendees at different career stages within engineering: it is hoped that students, engineers and managers will all benefit from the session.

The tutorial will include the following:
  • The tutor will share professional knowledge in this field drawing upon good practice over three decades involving research in consumer focused pre and post-product development as well as, automotive vehicles and defence products.

Tutorial participants will leave with an increased awareness of robust systems development processes. Through recognised systems engineering frameworks, this tutorial will also empower participants with technical knowledge to deliver successful error-free systems.
